DOVER, Del. (AP) - Harold “Jack” Peterman, a Republican state representative from Milford, has died after a long period of declining health.

A spokesman for the House Republican Caucus said Peterman’s family reported that he died Wednesday morning. He was 74.

Gov. Jack Markell joined lawmakers and Republican Party officials in expressing condolences to Peterman’s family.

Peterman, who was absent for most of the two-year legislative session that ended last month, announced in March after undergoing prostate cancer surgery that he would not seek re-election. He also struggled with other health issues, undergoing multiple back surgeries to correct pinched nerves that caused chronic pain and impaired his mobility.

Peterman, who was elected to the 33rd District House seat in 2010, was a retired farmer and former Kent County Levy Court commissioner.
