HOWE, Texas (AP) - Investigators say a flight instructor has died and a student pilot was hospitalized following a North Texas helicopter crash.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says the two-seat Hughes 269-C lost power and crashed Tuesday night in a field near Howe (how), about 50 miles north of Dallas.

DPS says 58-year-old Daniel Katen (KAY’-tuhn) of Lewisville died Wednesday morning at a Sherman hospital.

Staff Sgt. Mark Tackett says the student pilot and helicopter owner, 44-year-old Matthew Cavender from Howe (how), was hospitalized in Dallas for treatment of back injuries.

Tackett says investigators are trying to determine what caused the chopper to crash while doing maneuvers.
