FARGO, N.D. (AP) - A Fargo man has pleaded guilty to failing to pay income taxes for a period of more than a decade.

Gary Spencer Smith is charged in federal court with income tax evasion. The charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

Authorities say the 61-year-old Smith failed to pay about $242,000 he owed to the government between 1999 and 2010. He allegedly failed to file tax returns for 13 years.

Court documents show that Smith has agreed to pay back the money in $500 monthly payments.

Sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 31.
