PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Authorities say a 6-year-old girl was seriously injured when she was hit by a stray bullet while playing in front of her Philadelphia home.

The girl was struck after gunfire broke out in the East Germantown section of the city around 7 p.m. Tuesday. Chief Inspector Scott Small says the girl was shot in the chest under her left arm and was found unresponsive on the sidewalk next to the steps of her home.

The girl was rushed to a hospital in critical condition.

Small says investigators found 21 shell casings from two guns. He says police believe two people were firing shots together in the same direction.

Detectives are checking nearby surveillance cameras for video that may have captured the shooting.

No arrests have been made.
