GADSDEN, Ala. (AP) - The Etowah County coroner accused of stealing prescription medication has pleaded guilty to a theft charge and resigned from his coroner position.

News outlets report that 52-year-old Michael Head pleaded guilty in court Wednesday to a second-degree theft charge and received a suspended 31-month sentence.

A charge of unlawful possession of a controlled substance against him was dismissed as part of a plea agreement.

Head was arrested last week after authorities searched his home in Gadsden.

His son, 26-year-old John Simon Head, of Gadsden, was also arrested at the scene on drug charges.

Sheriff Todd Entrekin says Michael Head had submitted a letter resigning from his position as coroner.

Michael Head was placed on 2 years supervised probation and ordered to pay court costs, fees and restitution.
