INDEPENDENCE, Wis. (AP) - Heavy rains washed out some roads and led to flash flooding in west central Wisconsin. Some businesses and residents in Independence were voluntarily evacuated due to high water.

The National Weather Service says a flood warning is in effect for northern Trempealeau and Buffalo Counties until 10:15 p.m. Thursday. A flash flood watch is also in effect in western and southwest Wisconsin through Friday morning.

A news release from the Wisconsin Emergency Operations Center says the area received up to 8 inches of rain. Several county roads are closed and motorists are urged to be careful in flooded areas.

Trempealeau and Buffalo Counties declared state of emergencies. Some people were evacuated in Independence, and six families were displaced from their homes in the Mondovi and Gilmanton areas.
