NEWPORT, Vt. (AP) - Vermont’s defender general says his office will be among those investigating an incident in which two inmates allegedly took a guard hostage for more than two hours on Thursday. Authorities say the incident at the Northern State Correctional Facility in Newport was resolved without injury to staff or inmates.

Officials say inmates Mehmed Devac and Leroy Hughes used a sharp object to threaten a guard and issued a list of demands.

The 22-year-old Devac is serving time for assault and robbery with injury to the victim, aggravated assault and other charges. Hughes, 32, was convicted of grand larceny and assault and robbery with a weapon.

Defender General Matt Valerio, whose office represents inmates, says his staff will investigate the situation.
