SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a dump truck driver is hospitalized after he was hit by a medical transport van while trying to recover a tire that had broken loose from his vehicle on Interstate 81 in Syracuse.

Police say 51-year-old David Cutrone was driving north around 8 a.m. Thursday when a rear tire came off his truck.

Cutrone pulled to the side of the highway and was planning to retrieve the tire from the roadway when the van hit the tire.

The van’s driver lost control and hit Cutrone as he stood by the side of the interstate. Police say he suffered serious injuries to his legs and hips. He’s listed in serious condition at a Syracuse hospital.

The van’s driver suffered minor facial injuries.

Police are inspecting the dump truck.
