WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. (AP) - West Liberty University is proposing to ban firearms and other deadly weapons on campus after a recently enacted state law allowed the carrying of concealed handguns without a permit.

The university’s Board of Governors voted unanimously Wednesday to seek comments on the proposal from students, staff and faculty for 30 days. The board plans to consider the proposal Oct. 5.

West Liberty’s student conduct code already prohibits deadly weapons or destructive devices, even if they are legally possessed. The new proposal would include anyone on campus with some exceptions, including police.

Board member James Stultz tells The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register (https://bit.ly/2b9ivwX) that the proposal was prompted by the Legislature’s adoption of a bill allowing anyone 21 or older to carry a concealed handgun without permits or training.
