SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A woman who began her federal firefighting career 24 years ago on an engine crew in eastern Utah has been named the state’s new fire management officer for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.

Jessica Wade previously served as the acting regional fire management coordinator for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Pacific Southwest Region. Her first assignment in 1992 was to a BLM engine crew based in Vernal.

Acting BLM Utah Director Jenna Whitlock said Thursday that Wade’s in-depth knowledge and experience in wildland fire management makes her the perfect fit for the job.

She replaces Rick Belger, who recently took a position with the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho.
