SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Police believe a man who has been in and out of prison for nearly two decades killed his cellmate who was less than one month away from being let out.

Officers found 33-year-old James C. Corbett lying dead in his cell late Wednesday night. He was in a facility for inmates with mental health needs at the Utah State Prison in Draper.

Police say the 38-year-old Timothy P. Maez is the suspect.

Department of Corrections spokeswoman Brooke Adams said Friday in an email that Maez and Corbett had been cellmates since July 29. Maez’ most recent conviction that landed him in prison was for attempted kidnapping and retaliation against a judge.

The victim, Corbett, was in prison after being found guilty in 2007 of two counts of child sexual abuse. He was set to be discharged on Sept. 9.
