COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A Columbia teenager has been sentenced to 40 years in prison in the shooting death of a man last year.

The State of Columbia reports (https://bit.ly/2blWIW3) a judge handed down the sentence to 19-year-old Maurice Miller in court this week after Miller pleaded guilty to killing 26-year-old Rickey Baker during an attempted armed robbery in July 2015.

Authorities said Baker had been walking to a bus stop to go to work when he was attacked. Deputies found him lying in a road. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

On Wednesday, during the second day of his trial, Miller told his lawyers he wanted to plead guilty to murder. A plea deal was worked out.

If tried and found guilty by a jury, Miller could have gotten life without parole.
