DECATUR, Ga. (AP) - Authorities have arrested a suburban Atlanta sheriff’s deputy accused of making false statements to help his son avoid a stolen property purchase.

DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Cynthia Williams says Lt. Malik Brown was arrested Friday. Williams says the incident stems from 2014 when Brown, a sergeant at the time, tried to trace the history of a handgun allegedly in his son’s possession.

Brown said he ran a serial number on the firearm for personal reasons, an administrative violation of Georgia Crime Information Center policies. The firearm was not recovered.

Williams says Brown has been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the case.

Brown was released from jail on a $10,000 bond. He is charged with violation of oath by a public officer and false statements.
