STERLING, Colo. (AP) - The former Sterling Fire Department chief and his wife have been arrested on suspicion of theft.

Kurtis Vogel, who is currently the Eagle County fire chief, and his wife, Hope, are accused of stealing over $120,000 in money, equipment and memorabilia from the Sterling Fire Department before leaving the department in April.

No attorney was listed for the couple in court records.

District Attorney Brittny Lewton says city officials reported bookkeeping irregularities and missing fire department equipment after Vogel’s departure. Lewton says no equipment was taken that could affect firefighting.

In addition to the felony theft charge, Kurtis Vogel also faces charges of attempting to Influence a public servant, official misconduct and forgery.
