COLDEN, N.Y. (AP) - A teenager has pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from a deadly drag race earlier this year in western New York.

Eighteen-year-old Mercedes Castillo of the town of Holland entered the plea Thursday to criminally negligent homicide in the death of 28-year-old Chauncey Kloiber.

The Erie County District Attorney’s Office says she was racing 19-year-old Kody Schroeder in Colden on April 12 when Schroeder crashed into the back of a pickup truck, killing Kloiber, who was riding in his car.

The crash also seriously injured Schroeder’s 19-year-old passenger, who remains hospitalized with a traumatic brain injury. He was charged with vehicular manslaughter in July.

Castillo is due back in court on Monday.

It’s unclear if Castillo or Schroeder have attorneys who could comment on the charges.
