RENO, Nev. (AP) - A 31-year-old Reno man who was arrested last year for stealing two cans of beer from a convenience story could now face up to 30 years in prison for stabbing an elderly man with a screwdriver.

Daniel Rodriguez was found guilty in Washoe District Court Wednesday of battery with a deadly weapon against a person older than 60 at a downtown Reno motel on Sept. 29, 2015.

Reno police say they were called to a 7-11 about the beer theft that same night. They attempted to issue Rodriguez a citation, but he refused to sign it and was taken into custody.

Detectives later learned he was a suspect in the stabbing.

He faces three to 30 years in prison at his sentencing set for Oct. 12.
