ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) - The State Treasurer’s office is setting up a booth at the Brown County Fair to give unclaimed property back to the rightful owners.

The State Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Division will have a booth open starting Tuesday.

Unclaimed property refers to accounts in financial institutions, businesses and government agencies that have had no activity for three years or longer.

The division currently has more than $344 million in unclaimed funds. The state holds the money in a custodial capacity until the money can be returned to the rightful owners.

Treasurer Rich Sattgast says the goal is to put money back into South Dakotans’ hands.
