BEDFORD, Va. (AP) - Virginia State Police say two people died Friday evening in separate car crashes in Bedford County.

State Police said in a statement that the first crash happened Friday around 5 p.m. on Coles Creek Road west of Hopkins Road. State Police say a Chevrolet Cobalt struck a Toyota SR-5 head-on. State Police say the 59-year-old driver of the Toyota, John Wilton Pendleton III of Boones Mill, Virginia, was not wearing his seatbelt and died. State Police say charges are pending against the driver of the Chevrolet, who was injured.

State Police say a second person died in a single-car crash on Route 644. State Police say 21-year-old Ashton Casey Shawn Short of Goode, Virginia, was not wearing his seatbelt when he drove off the road and his car overturned.
