MILWAUKEE (AP) - Five men died in three separate shootings within nine hours in Milwaukee, prompting the city’s mayor to pledge to work for a safer community.

The shootings happened between 6 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday, according to police. No suspects were in custody Saturday and police believe the shootings were not related, although they continue to investigate.

A 21-year-old man and a 23-year-old man were killed shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday in a robbery-related shooting. One man died at the scene and the other was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

Four people were shot about 3 a.m. Saturday during a fight in the parking lot of the All Stars tavern. A 34-year-old man and a 36-year-old man were killed. Two people who were injured were hospitalized in stable condition.

Speaking at a peace march Saturday about 2 miles from two of the shootings, Mayor Tom Barrett said the tavern’s license will be under scrutiny.

“I know there have been problems at that tavern before,” Barrett said. “I’m going to do everything I can, and I’m sure the council will, too, to look at that tavern and see what the track record is.”

A man was fatally shot while driving Friday evening in Milwaukee, according to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office. His vehicle crashed into another one, causing minor injuries to the second vehicle’s occupants. His age was not immediately released.

“We had a horrible night last night,” Barrett said.

A preliminary investigation showed no evidence the shootings were related, Barrett said, but police are still working on the cases.

“I’m determined as ever,” the mayor said. “I’m angry about what happened last night. But we’re going to work together as a community to make sure this is a city where people can be safe.”
