CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) - Fire officials in Rhode Island say no one was injured when a church caught fire after it was struck by lightning during a thunderstorm.

Flames broke out Friday evening at People’s Baptist Church in Cranston. The church is home to three separate congregations.

Fire officials believe lighting hit the corner of the church, melting its vinyl siding and setting the wooden shingles underneath ablaze. It took Cranston firefighters more than an hour to douse the flames.

The church’s attic was damaged. The church will be closed this weekend while officials assess the damage.

Officials say lighting also caused two barn fires in Foster. No injuries were reported.
