DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) - The Des Moines Fire Department has been awarded a $1.1 million federal grant to buy protective breathing gear for firefighters.

The grant comes from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The grant will buy new air bottles, harnesses and masks that meet or exceed current industry standards. The new self-contained breathing equipment will replace more than 140 others that will soon reach the end of their useful service.

Department and city leaders say the new equipment will increase safety for fire fighters and HAZMAT technicians during often dangerous conditions.
