GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (AP) - A former Goose Creek High assistant principal has been sentenced to one year in jail for having sex with a 16-year-old student.

Local media outlets report Saturday that 37-year-old Paul Herman pleaded guilty to unforced sexual battery of a student.

Prosecutors had sought the five-year maximum. Herman must spend the first six months of probation under house arrest and attend sex offender counseling.

Herman resigned from Goose Creek High in February 2015, after the girl’s mother discovered text messages between the two and went to authorities. The relationship had started several months earlier.

The teen’s father settled a lawsuit against Berkeley County School District in June. It alleged negligence and accused school officials of ignoring obvious signs.

A district spokeswoman says administrators followed district policy and cooperated with law enforcement.
