PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix police say an officer fatally shot a homicide suspect who used a knife to cut the officer during an attempt to arrest him.

Spokesman James Holmes says the officer received stitches and is in good condition.

Police responded to a homicide on Friday night in west Phoenix involving a 48-year-old man who had been shot. They determined that the suspect in the fatal shooting was a 38-year-old man who lived in an apartment about four miles from the shooting.

Police obtained a search warrant for the man’s apartment and entered it on Saturday morning. A 14-year department veteran walked into the man’s bedroom when the man lunged at him from a closet with a knife, cutting the officer’s hand. The officer fatally shot the suspect, who has not been identified.
