CALDWELL, Idaho (AP) - A special prosecutor has cleared Canyon County Sheriff Kieran Donahue of wrongdoing after an investigation into whether he misused county resources to benefit his charitable organization.

The Canyon County Prosecutor’s Office on Friday released the findings of special prosecutor Daniel Norris, who is the Malheur County District Attorney.

Norris said he would not prosecute Donahue because “the sheriff did not violate any laws.”

Last August, Donahue was accused of misusing his position as sheriff to operate his nonprofit organization that campaigns to end domestic violence, runs the Man Up Crusade and fundraises for groups supporting victims.

Donahue said in a statement that “addressing societal issues and conducting community outreach is an inherent aspect” of his position as sheriff. He called the investigation an unfortunate distraction for the county but said the county is moving forward.
