LAKE ANDES, S.D. (AP) - A judge says estate representatives for a couple killed in a murder-suicide can hold an auction of what remains of the family’s property after a house fire.

The Argus Leader (https://argusne.ws/2b0sJmL) reports that Judge Bruce Anderson said Thursday that the estates of Scott and Nicole Westerhuis can have the September auction.

Scott Westerhuis last year shot his wife and their four children, then set fire to their home and killed himself. Authorities believe the couple stole more than $1 million before their deaths.

Attorneys for the Westerhuises’ former employer and a non-profit where they had financial oversight asked for a delay to determine what property was purchased using funds from the organizations.

Creditors have made claims ranging from the hundreds of dollars to $2 million from the state Department of Education.
