POWAY, Calif. (AP) - The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department says four deputies fired shots at a gun-wielding motorist who stole a sheriff’s vehicle and was found dead inside an SUV that he later carjacked.

Authorities first fired at an auto repair shop in suburban Poway early Thursday after a deputy responded to a report of a suspicious person looking inside cars. They fired again at the suspect after he stole the deputy’s vehicle and stopped at an intersection to force out the driver of a black SUV at gunpoint.

The suspect drove into a ravine, where he was found dead with upper-body injuries. His name wasn’t released.

Lt. Ken Nelson says it’s unclear if the suspect fired a gun or how he died.
