NEW YORK (AP) - About 250 firefighters battled a ferocious fire in Staten Island that burned three homes.

The blaze began just after 6 p.m. Thursday in a three-story house on Benzinger Avenue. The fire then spread to two adjacent houses on the crowded street. Residents in the area were advised to avoid heavy smoke conditions by closing windows.

Heat from the intense fire melted siding on buildings across the street. The fire was brought under control about three hours later.

Fire officials say one person was seriously injured and 11 firefighters suffered minor injuries.

The Red Cross says it’s helping at least 42 people displaced by the fire.
