TUSKEGEE, Ala. (AP) - An Alabama grand jury has decided not to bring charges against Auburn police officers who fatally shot a woman whose parents called 911 for help, fearing their daughter wanted to kill herself.

The Auburn Police Division said in a statement Friday a Macon County grand jury declined to return an indictment in the shooting of Melissa Boarts.

Boarts’ mother called 911 after she took off in a car April 3. Auburn officers followed Boarts into Macon County, where she pulled over. Police say Boarts got out of her car and charged officers with a knife. The statement Friday said two officers fired at Boarts when she got within feet of a retreating officer.

Police said drug tests found Boarts was intoxicated and had taken at least six different medications.
