AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - State labor officials say Maine unemployment rose slightly from June to July.

The Maine Department of Labor says the unemployment rate was 3.9 percent, up from 3.7 percent the prior month. Unemployment has also climbed from a recent low of 3.4 percent in March and April.

Officials say the unemployment rate remains down from 4.4 percent a year ago.

State officials also say Maine’s slight rise in unemployment is balanced by other measurements that show improvement, such as the number of payroll jobs.

The nationwide unemployment rate of 4.9 percent was unchanged from June and down from 5.3 percent from a year ago.

The New England unemployment rate was 4.3 percent for July.
