KELSO, Wash. (AP) - A man fatally shot Wednesday by a Kelso police officer after attacking a gas station clerk, customer and the officer with a wooden staff has been identified.

On Friday, Cowlitz County Coroner Tim Davidson identified the man killed as 27-year-old Omer Ismail Ali of Spokane.

The coroner says Ali died of a gunshot wound to the chest with other significant conditions including a gunshot wound to the jaw and neck. His manner of death was homicide resulting from a violent altercation with law enforcement.

Authorities say patrol officer John Johnston shot Ali after he attacked a clerk, a customer and the officer himself with a 4-foot-long wooden staff. Ali died at the scene.

The clerk, customer and officer were treated and released from a hospital.

The investigation is ongoing and the officer is on paid leave.
