NEW YORK (AP) - An ex-convict has pleaded not guilty in the fatal stabbing of a 30-year-old man near the Staten Island ferry terminal on Staten Island earlier this month.

The Staten Island Advance reports (https://bit.ly/2b4j4a0 ) 49-year-old Leonard Evans entered the plea on Thursday to murder and related offenses in the slaying of German Pagan.

Authorities say Evans stabbed Pagan multiple times following a dispute. The victim’s body was found on a park bench near the terminal around 2 a.m. Aug. 4.

Records show Evans is a registered sex offender who was most recently released from prison in August 2014 after serving a sentence for criminal sale of a controlled substance. He was convicted in the case in 2001.

Defense attorney Mark Fonte says the defense investigation is ongoing.
