BOSTON (AP) - A woman police say doesn’t have a driver’s license has been held on $5,000 bail after pleading not guilty to running down three pedestrians walking Boston’s Freedom Trail.

Shanitqua Steele was arraigned Friday on a number of charges in connection with the accident Thursday, including driving without a license and negligent operation.

Prosecutors say the 25-year-old Needham woman ran a red light, struck the pedestrians in a crosswalk, and then fled on foot into a nearby building.

Several witnesses lifted the car off a woman pinned underneath. The victims were described as a 63-year-old woman from Spain, a 45-year-old Milford woman and her 9-year-old son. They were hospitalized but their injuries are not life-threatening.

The car, a 2016 Mercedes-Benz, had been rented by a relative. Steele’s lawyer did not comment.
