PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Officials have created space for more names on the South Dakota Fallen Firefighters Memorial Monument in Pierre.

The memorial was installed in 1996, featuring the names of 26 firefighters who died in the line of duty in South Dakota or serving the state elsewhere. Since then, 17 names have been added, and the 18th will be added in coming weeks.

With space available for just four more names, the South Dakota Firefighters Association decided to hire a company to create more space on the front of the monument.

Association President Charlie Kludt tells the Capital Journal (https://bit.ly/2bitUvR ) that there’s now space for the names of another 30 firefighters.

Kludt says the project was timed to be completed for the annual Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service, which this year is Oct. 21.
