PHOENIX (AP) - The Latest on the fatal shooting of a suspect who fought with a Phoenix police officer (all times local):

10:45 a.m.

Phoenix police say a man was fatally shot as he was fighting to get at an officer’s firearm.

Sgt. Vince Lewis says the suspect and the officer were engaged in a struggle over the officer’s weapon early Friday when a detective arrived to give assistance.

According to authorities, both the officer and the detective fired their weapons, striking the suspect.



The man ran about 50 yards before collapsing.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lewis says the incident began when the officer was investigating a suspicious car parked at a Phoenix park around 2:30 a.m.

Police say the suspect approached the officer and a physical fight ensued.

The officer was treated and released for a broken nose.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Phoenix police say they fatally shot a man who got into a fight with an officer and broke his nose.

Sgt. Vince Lewis says an officer was investigating a suspicious car parked at a Phoenix park around 2:30 a.m. on Friday when the suspect approached him. A physical fight ensued between the suspect and the officer before a detective who was nearby responded.

Lewis says the officer’s nose was broken in the altercation.

Police believe both the officer and detective fired their weapons at the suspect, who then ran about 50 yards before collapsing. He was pronounced dead on scene.

The suspect hasn’t been identified. The officer is a 19-year veteran of the department and the detective has been with Phoenix police for eight years.
