RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Police are preparing to hold an active shooter training exercise at Virginia Commonwealth University.

City of Richmond and VCU Police will hold the exercise Wednesday at the Monroe Park Campus.

Officers will simulate a situation in which a single shooter is in the Shafer Street Playhouse, a building that includes performance spaces used by the Department of Theatre. There will be simulated sounds of gunfire and crowd panic.

Officials say they’ll notify residents and area businesses of the drill through mail and social media. They’ll also send text messages that day to the more than 45,000 VCU Alert subscribers.

Franklin Street will be closed between Harrison and Laurel streets between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Vehicles also won’t be able access Shafer Street between Franklin and Grace.
