AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - The Auburn City Council could soon approve a measure that would make way for Uber’s return to the town.

The Opelika-Auburn News reports (https://bit.ly/2aeZcFG) that the city council Tuesday night will review an ordinance to amend the city’s vehicle-for-hire rules, which involve companies such as Uber and Lyft.

Authorities say the ordinance adds a section to the vehicles-for-hire code that sets separate regulations for companies that use an internet application to connect passengers and drivers. The ordinance states that background checks are required, but can be performed by Uber.

City documents show that Uber has reviewed the ordinance, and a company representative “has expressed that they are agreeable to this language.”

City officials say the draft of the ordinance emulates one adopted by the city of Tuscaloosa in June.
