MASON, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say an Ingham County deputy was injured while subduing a defendant who lunged at a prosecutor with a shank in a courtroom.

Authorities tell the Lansing State Journal (https://on.lsj.com/2aA1gnY ) 35-year-old Joshua Harding tried to attack an assistant prosecutor as a jury was coming back Monday evening with a verdict in his trial.

A sheriff’s office official says Harding wasn’t able to reach the prosecutor and was apprehended by a deputy.

Sheriff Gene Wriggelsworth says he believes the deputy broke his nose and Harding suffered minor injuries.

Harding, a registered sex offender, is on trial on charges of second-degree criminal sexual conduct. Police say he assaulted two children last year.

The incident comes less than a month after a jail inmate trying to escape from a courthouse in St. Joseph fatally shot two bailiffs before he was killed by other officers.
