NEW YORK (AP) - A jury has convicted a former New York City high school basketball star for shooting a rival opponent who was also his onetime roommate.

Davontay Grace was convicted of weapons and assault charges Tuesday in the 2015 shooting of Dexter Hopkins. He was acquitted of an attempted murder charge.

The two played against one another at rival Brooklyn high schools.

Grace faces up to 25 years in prison when sentenced on Aug. 22.

The New York Daily News (https://nydn.us/2aQEREv ) reports the men, now both 24, were also roommates at a Georgia prep school.

Prosecutors say Grace shot Hopkins six times in broad daylight on Jan. 23, 2015. The paper says it’s not clear what prompted the violence.
