RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) - Prosecutors on Long Island are taking the unusual step of charging both a driver and passenger in the deaths of two people involved in a crash last winter.

The prosecutors say both the driver, Kathy Horan, and her husband, Frank Horan, are criminally liable. Newsday (https://nwsdy.li/2af9HZp ) reports the passenger is being charged as an accomplice because he allegedly drove his wife away from the crash scene.

Lawyers for the husband and wife say they will challenge the validity of the unique dual indictment.

Kathy Horan was driving in Medford on Feb. 19, when prosecutors say she hit a group of people inspecting damage from a prior accident. A man and woman who were struck died.

They were each freed on $150,000 bond. They face up to seven years if convicted.
