MAYS LANDING, N.J. (AP) - A longtime Atlantic County lawyer has become the first woman to hold the county’s top law enforcement post.

Diane Ruberton was sworn in Tuesday as the acting county prosecutor. She succeeds Jim McClain, who was sworn in Tuesday as a state Superior Court judge.

Ruberton served as an assistant county counsel before she was hired as an assistant prosecutor in 1999. She has several posts in the prosecutor’s office and had been the county’s first assistant prosecutor since August 2012.

Ruberton received dual bachelor degrees in psychology and criminal justice from Villanova University in 1992. She then attended Widener University’s School of Law, graduating cum laude in 1995.

She was admitted to the bars in New Jersey and Pennsylvania in 1995.
