RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A man has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for the 2014 stabbing death of a Raleigh teen.

Local media outlets report that 22-year-old Jerome Lee Gardner was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to second-degree murder.

Gardner was arrested a few hours after the July 2014 stabbing death of 16-year-old Tahje Mials. The two had been fighting after the big Fourth of July fireworks display in downtown Raleigh.

Gardner on Monday apologized to Mials’ family in court.
