PATERSON, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a pedestrian has been struck and killed by a freight train in northern New Jersey.

Melanie Boyer, a spokeswoman for New York, Susquehanna & Western Railway, tells The Record (https://bit.ly/2aEMJZQ ) the victim was struck at a crossing in Paterson around 6:40 p.m. Monday.

Officials didn’t immediately identify the victim. It’s unclear what the pedestrian was doing on the railway’s tracks.

Boyer says the train was traveling at about 25 mph when the person was hit.

Police say the incident is under investigation.
