LOS ANGELES (AP) - A small plane has crashed into a building near a Los Angeles airport, killing the pilot.

Authorities say the single-engine Arion Lightning went down around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday two blocks from Van Nuys Airport. It disintegrated, killing the pilot, but nobody on the ground was hurt. The building wasn’t badly damaged.

Authorities say the pilot was practicing touch-and-go landings at the airport and made a hard landing before taking off again.

Desmond Shaw, an airborne traffic reporter for radio station KNX-AM, says he heard the pilot telling the control tower that he’d heard a banging noise and was told that part of his landing gear was loose.

Shaw says the plane circled back and was preparing to land when it lost power and went down.
