MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Donald Trump is refusing to endorse House Speaker Paul Ryan and Ryan’s Republican primary challenger is trying to capitalize.

Trump said Tuesday that he wasn’t ready to endorse Ryan. He faces a longshot Republican opponent in businessman Paul Nehlen, who is running his first campaign.

Nehlen campaign manager Eric Odom says in a statement that “Americans from across the nation are sending the clear message to Speaker Ryan that his job-killing deals with Asia, wage-busting open-border policy, and constant alignment with Hilary Clinton against the Republican Party in the presidential election are no longer acceptable.”

Ryan spokesman Zack Roday says “Neither Speaker Ryan nor anyone on his team has ever asked for Donald Trump’s endorsement. And we are confident in a victory next week regardless.”

The primary is Aug. 9
