SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - Santa Ana police say a homeless man was in critical condition after being shot by officers during a struggle outside the city’s main courthouse.

Cpl. Anthony Bertagna says Richard Swihart became hostile and got into a physical altercation with one of the officers Monday morning outside the Central Justice Center.

Bertagna didn’t know why the officers stopped Swihart, described as a 32-year-old local transient.

Bertagna says Swihart tried to grab an officer’s gun, prompting the officer’s partner to open fire, striking the man in the torso.

Officials say the officer who fired feared for his partner’s safety and the safety of people in the area.

The Orange County Register reports (https://bit.ly/2ae4QI3) Swihart underwent surgery and was in critical condition late Monday.
