POWNAL, Vt. (AP) - Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin drank a big glass of water to celebrate a clean-water milestone in Pownal.

Shumlin, local legislators and the commissioner of the Department of Environmental Conservation were at the Pownal Rescue Squad building on Monday. They each drank water that came from a formerly contaminated water system.

The ceremony comes days after the state lifted the “do not drink” order for the system that was earlier found to be contaminated with low levels of the chemical PFOA.

Pownal’s Fire District Number Two was found to be contaminated with slightly elevated levels of the chemical. A filter system was installed on the system earlier this month.

Officials say test results last week showed that a new treatment system is effectively removing all PFOA from the drinking water system.
