ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Crews are working to shut off a burst water pipe that created a large sinkhole that swallowed a sport utility vehicle parked on an Albany street.

The SUV’s owner says he walked out of his apartment around 10 a.m. Tuesday to find his Ford Escape sunk halfway into the hole. Within a few minutes the entire vehicle had disappeared into a hole that was 15 feet wide, 30 feet long and up to 15 feet deep by midday.

Albany public works officials say a burst pipe undermined soil beneath the pavement. Water continued to gush from the hole into the afternoon. Officials say workers were having difficulty shutting off water because the valves are so old.

The SUV landed on a natural gas line crews were attempting to shut off.
