SPRINGFIELD, Vt. (AP) - State regulators have approved the sale of five Vermont nursing homes to a Pennsylvania-based nursing home operator.

The Valley News (https://bit.ly/2avfj0L ) reports that Genesis Healthcare has received approval from the Green Mountain Care Board for the $39 million deal to acquire nursing homes in Springfield, Bennington, Burlington, Berlin and St. Johnsbury. Genesis is operating the homes under a management contract that took effect in December.

The deal will make the company, which has nursing homes in more than 30 states, the largest nursing home operator.

The approval comes as the company announced an agreement with the U.S. Justice Department to pay $52.7 million to settle claims the company violated “federal and state health care fraud and abuse laws and regulations.”

Company officials didn’t respond to requests for comment on Monday.
