BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) - A trial date has been set for a Burlington man accused of using a machete and skateboard to attack his 16-year-old girlfriend.

The Hawk Eye reports (https://bit.ly/2aplW2W ) that 21-year-old Dakota Poland is charged with kidnapping with intent to torture and related crimes. He’s pleaded not guilty. His trial is scheduled to begin Aug. 16 in Des Moines County District Court.

Prosecutors say Poland attacked the girl March 10 when she was moving out of his parents’ home, where she often stayed. Court records say he wouldn’t let her leave and punched and kicked her and used the machete, skateboard and a glass ashtray to inflict more injuries. Poland’s mother intervened, and his father took the girl to a hospital.
