ELKO, Nev. (AP) - Firefighters have strengthened their grip on a wildfire that spread across more than 10 square miles of grassy rangeland in less than a day.

Fire officials say the fire burning 25 miles north of Battle Mountain was 80 percent contained by late Friday.

Nearly 400 personnel are continuing fire suppression tactics.

Lightning ignited the blaze Thursday and it had grown to 6,600 acres within 24 hours.

Officials say the fire has been erratic at times due to changing weather conditions.

Bureau of Land Management spokesman Gregory Deimel (DYE’-mul) says the fire is threatening sage grouse habitat.

According to Deimel, some residences and structures north of the fire were threatened but no evacuations were ordered.
